French Translation of ‘I Wonder What This Button Does’
Parlez-vous français? If so, you’ll be interested in John Garner’s translation into French of last week’s introduction to revision control systems.
«Je me demande à quoi sert ce bouton?» is available on John’s website. He’s done a great job with this translation (or so I’m told :) ), and it was fascinating to work with him to make sure that the various important bits of the article made their way into French.
As an aside, if translation is at all interesting to you, I highly recommend Douglas Hofstadter’s book “Le Ton beau de Marot.” It changed the way I think about language… Probably the best book I’ve ever read. :)

Hi Mike it was a real pleasure working on you with the translation. I must say you got me with the “Le Ton beau de Marot” I was really wondering why on earth someone would call a book like that. The play on words took some time to sync in. It must have been all the cups of tea (food for the soul while translating) that were finally kicking in.
If I remember correctly, you were thinking about offering Bavaria and maybe all of Germany, if they are lucky, with a German translation of your article ;)
Although I worked in Hamburg for a while I always managed to get by with my English but I’m sure that you can think of someone that is savvy enough in German to help you out ;)
BTW, all the people that read over my translation to get rid of typos and iron out some sentences were interested in Subversion, Hélène is a journalist and François works in a hospital so you see how far you reach !
