Apartments in Munich
So. I’m looking for an apartment in Munich. The “why” will have to wait a week or so to make sure everything’s solid, but the apartment-looking cannot.
If you know of a cozy little one-bedroom apartment somewhere near the center of the city that’s avaliable… well… now, I’d love it if you dropped me a line: mike@mikewest.org. Likewise, if you have general advice about the city, I’d love to hear it. Until then, I’ll be digging through newspapers…
UPDATE: I did find a decent place for the short term. I ended up looking through Immobilien Scout 24 (German) and visiting a few of the places listed there, but actually found my apartment in the Classified Advertisements: Munich forums (English) at Toy Town Germany. Check those out if you’re in the market.

In Germany’s university towns many –if not most- students share an apartment (the german word for apartment is “Wohnung”). This way of rooming by flat-share is called a “Wohngemeinschaft” (abbreviation: WG). It is not unusual that male and female students occupy the same apartment. It means that each student owns a room; together the two to five students share phone, kitchen and bathroom / shower.
In big cities, particularly in Munich (WG München) and Hamburg, it is difficult to find such a WG.
In order to save money those special roommate services should be consulted, which do not charge you. One of the largest company in Germany is called Studenten-WG.de. On their website you will also find offers for flats of your own. On their website you will also find offers for flats of your own (search for Wohnung Berlin, München Wohnung or Hamburg Wohnung to find the place in YOUR city). However, the not so well-to-do student is advised to share an apartment because of the very high rents in Munich and other large university towns.
